TTS Ships Equipment GmbH is working on an order for Hamburg-based shipowner MPC Steamship to design and deliver the main parts of the hatch covers for a series of nine 13,100 TEU container vessels building at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd. The order, which comprises 83 lift-on/lift-off panels covering 21 hatches per ship, is scheduled for delivery throughout 2010 and 2011.
“In recent years we have seen a rapid growth in the size of container carriers. Vessels, which traditionally reached a capacity of 8,000 TEU, are now being built with capacities in excess of 13,000 TEU. This development is challenging the shipbuilding industry, particularly equipment suppliers,” says Karsten Kroschel, sales and project manager at TTS Ships Equipment. “Here at TTS we have the expertise in design and fabrication to produce hatch cover panels that meet these increased requirements.”
TTS Ships Equipment has been involved in the creation of lift-on/lift-off hatch cover systems since the development of the first containership. The company has developed the use of advanced stress calculation systems and computer aided design technology to ensure its hatch cover panels can accommodate higher container loadings, while keeping panel weights within the permitted maximum for handling by shore cranes.
“With this order we expect to strengthen our very good relationship with MPC Steamship,” adds Kroschel. “We look forward to working with them on future projects.”
